Sermon Recap

Text: Matthew 5:1-13

Big Idea: God's economy is not like the world's...

Summary: The Sermon on the Mount is sometimes referred to as Jesus' ethical framework for His Kingdom. While an element of that is true, it cannot be taken out of the context of Matthew's Gospel as a whole, which proclaims that the King has come to save His people. By emphasizing that the saving is from Jesus, that transforms the Sermon on the Mount, and more specifically the Beatitudes, to be a natural result of being saved by the King. In other words, it's who we are and who we are increasingly becoming, not a "to do" list.

The word "blessed" is sometimes translated as "happy" or "fortunate." It carries the idea of the good life with an exclamatory "congrats to you..." While many of these Beatitudes are not pleasant or desirable (being poor in spirit or mourning), Jesus is expressing the redemptive blessing that is infused into the lives of those who are found in this condition but are a part of the Kingdom. In this, Jesus portrays a picture of what it looks like in His Kingdom. While it is not a "to do" list, it should, nevertheless, move the heart of the Christian to desire an increased congruence between what Jesus describes and his or her own life.
