Sermon Discussion Guide: 1/5/25
Sermon Recap
Text: Matthew 6:19-24
Question: What does your heart treasure?
Summary: Jesus continues His sermon by speaking to our relationship with wealth. He gives three teachings in a short section that work together to draw out the relationship we have with things of this earth, primarily with our wealth. He addresses the temporary nature of earthly things versus the eternal nature of heavenly treasure, and connects what we seek after with what our heart loves. Then, Jesus says the eye is like a window for the body that lets in light or shuts it out leaving us spiritually darkened. The things we look at and the way we look at them reveal something about our spiritual condition. Finally, Jesus makes a clear point, you cannot serve God and money. You cannot have two masters. Collectively, Jesus’ teaching calls us to evaluate our heart’s posture toward our wealth in light of being citizens of a heavenly kingdom.
Discussion Questions:
1. Do you or have you ever collected anything (baseball cards, etc.)? What was it and why were you so passionate about it?
2. Why do you think we as humans develop such attachments with physical things, especially when we know they’re not eternal?
3. What does it look like to store up heavenly treasures, especially in light of Matthew 20:1-15 (read it again if you need a refresh)?
4. What does a “healthy eye” look like for the citizen of God’s kingdom?
5. What does it look like to have a “bad eye” regarding wealth and possessions?
6. Where are you most tempted to be controlled or manipulated by the allure of earthly things? Why do you think this has such a grip on you?
7. What kinds of check and balances do you have or could you implement to safeguard your heart from loving things of this world more than is right?
